    ABADA Capoeira Melbourne – Richmond

    Category: Classes and Martial Arts

Discover a new world of movement and rhythm at ABADA-Capoeira In our Capoeira classes children learn to improve coordination, rhythmic sense and concentration, discover martial art techniques and acrobatics, play instruments and sing, whilst exploring the joys of being active and interactive and having a lot of fun! We offer kids classes in Brunswick East, Richmond and Port Melbourne Kids Capoeira classes cover basic Capoeira techniques and music including traditional instruments and songs in Portuguese. We use games and exercises that work both physical coordination and mental abilities. This allows the children to improve their balance and explore their capabilities and limitations; while at the same time helps them learn teamwork, discipline and independence. In kids class musicality plays an important role as an aid in developing a child’s psychomotor abilities and is also a mechanism to release emotional tension and nervous energy. Simple activities like dancing and clapping are rich experiences that allow the child to develop their rhythmic sense.

    Integrated Combat Centre

    Category: Classes and Martial Arts

“DISCIPLINE, RESPECT, HUMILITY. IT’S ABOUT MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT AND IT BECOMES A WAY OF LIFE.” ICC is no ordinary fight club; it’s a fighting fit family of everyday people and elite champions all working together with a mutual respect and unbreakable bond. At ICC it’s about understanding each individual’s ability and helping them to exceed their expectations through technique (the why) and application (the how). It’s also about developing self-discipline and focus; something that its founder, David Tong, believes is transferable to everyday life. “ALL THE FACETS OF MARTIAL ARTS ARE TRANSFERABLE TO OTHER AREAS OF YOUR LIFE.”   BIRTH OF ICC The birth of ICC began with the childhood dreams and vision of David Tong, a lifelong student of martial arts. Like most kids growing up in the 1980s, he watched the classic Kung Ku movies and idolised Bruce Lee. Naturally, he pleaded for karate lessons (the only style of martial arts on offer at the time). David was a teenage karate champion who in his adult years also took up BJJ and MMA – and won many BJJ championships and MMA bouts as a result. He was also selected for an Olympic judo and boxing scholarship by the Australian Institute of Sport in [2014]. Yet David’s driving passion was growing martial arts and giving others the chance to enjoy martial arts in their own capacity. He didn’t want people to be restricted to only one martial arts style when attending a gym. As such, ICC is an all-in-one mixed martial arts combat centre with 5 styles available for everyone. It is a place where anyone from absolute beginners to professional athletes could go to learn, train and grow under one roof. “MARTIAL ARTS ISN’T JUST ABOUT THE PHYSICAL CHALLENGE; IT’S A THINKING SPORT, A CHESS MATCH WITHIN YOURSELF; STRATEGIC AND TACTICAL.”   STYLES Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Karate MMA Kickboxing JKD Concepts

    Aikido Yoshinkai NSW (AYNSW)

    Category: Classes and Martial Arts

What is Aikido? Simply put, aikido is a Japanese martial art in which the basic principle is to utilize your opponent’s power to control them in a lock or a throw. Aikido is often referred to as the peaceful art or way of harmony. Indeed the meaning of the character Ai in aikido is to match or harmonize. In aikido we do not promote aggression nor violence. Rather than overcoming an aggressor with brute force, aikido relies on the power of circular movements, through which an opponent’s attack or momentum can be redirected against them. Aikido Yoshinkai NSW (AYNSW) was established in 2005 by Darren Friend (6th dan) & Peggy Woo (5th dan). Both Darren and Peggy trained extensively in Japan and were  aikido instructors at the Aikido Yoshinkan Hombu (Headquarters) in Tokyo for over 10 years. Their experience training in Japan, having truly immersed in aikido and Japanese culture has given them a unique insight and perspective which they bring to every class. Aiki Kids Classes The Aiki Kids program was developed in order to make aikido accessible to children. The techniques taught are simplified and made appropiate for younger people to begin their aikido training. As the students develop and gain confidence, abilty and coordination they are slowly introduced to the techniqes as they are  trained by adults. The Aiki Kids program emphasises cooperation, discipline, focus and concentration. Each class is fast paced but repeats the same basic elements ech time in different ways so that there is constant repetition and practise of basics but without the boredom. Aiki Kids is open to kids 5 years and above. Through the years we have had a number of students make the journey from Aiki Kids all the way into regular adult classes and are still enjoying training as young adults. There are a number of families training in the dojo, kids really enjoy doing aikido with their parents. AYNSW also has a teen class on Fridays. This is a bridging class preparing young people for the regular adults classes. The full aikido syllaus is taught along with practical aikido in self defence. AYNSW Aiki Kids Program Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 5.15pm-6.15pm & Saturday 10.00-11.00am Teen Class Friday 5.15-6.15pm AYNSW instructors are registered with Aikido Yoshinkai Federation, Japan. AYNSW instructors are acredited with the Martial Arts Industry Assocaition(MAIA), the peek acreditaion body for martial arts in Australia. All instructors have Working With Children checks. AYNSW Chief Instructor, Darren Friend Shihan teaches most classes on the schedule. AYNSW is a full time dojo, the training floor has been purposefully made to ensure student safety. Aiki Kids can be joined at anytime. Students can attend once a week or more often as their schedule allows. Contact AYNSW for more details or to arrange a free trial lesson.

    First Taekwondo Adelaide University

    Category: Classes and Martial Arts

History of First Taekwondo The ancient art of Tae-Kyon evolved during the Silla Dynasty approximately 1300 years ago in Korea. This primitive art of unarmed combat was first practiced by monks. The three kingdoms of Silla, Koguryo and Baekebae made up ancient Korea. The smallest of these was Silla and was constantly invaded. King Chiu Heung then the 24th king of Silla gathered the strong, intellectual and patriotic youth of his kingdom to defend its territory. This elite group of dynamic youths prepared themselves mentally and physically to the extreme in the practice of Tae-Kyon and called themselves Hwa Rang Do. To give the group an identity a strict moral code was incorporated: Be loyal to your king Be obedient to your parents Be honourable to your friends Never retreat in battle Make a just kill With this band of dedicated and fearless Hwa Rang the three kingdoms were unified. After the Silla Dynasty the art of Tae-Kyon had a few setbacks. During the Yi Dynasty Tae Kyon was not encouraged, rather there was a preference to literary arts. As a result development in the art was sadly hindered. Worse was yet to come. When the Japanese occupied Korea the practice of Tae-Kyon was absolutely forbidden. Only in very remote rural areas a few traces of Tae Kyon survived. The art was nearly extinct. Not until after liberation (36 years of Japanese occupation) did the intense feelings of patriotism and national pride revive the practice of Tae-Kyon. Today Tae-Kyon is known popularly all over the world as Taekwondo. The seed of Taekwondo was planted in the 60’s and South Australia’s initial class was conducted at the Adelaide Y.M.C.A. centre by Master Vernon Low and one of the first students was John O’Brien, now the Chief Instructor, he continues to promote the art to thousands of South Australians who are enjoying the vast array of benefits from practising this most progressive and effective modern art. First Taekwondo is most assuredly a dynamic and extremely effective martial art – more valid in the violent times in which we live, than ever before. But the art reaches much further than mere combat effectiveness. The discipline, mental training and varied techniques also provide the grounds for engendering in the practitioner a strong sense of justice, fortitude, compassion, humility and resolve. It is this important mental conditioning that separates the true practitioner from one who has mastered only the physical aspects of the art.

    Aikido Shudokan – Heidelberg

    Category: Classes and Martial Arts

The Aikido Shudokan was the first Yoshinkan style dojo in Australia, founded by Joe Thambu Shihan in 1980, and has schools in Heidelberg West, Springvale, Fitzroy, Williamstown and Albury, teaching men, women and children.   The style of Aikido is a dynamic and self-defence effective system of throwing, joint-locks, strikes and pinning techniques. It emphasises practical efficiency and is the style used to train women and anti-riot teams of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. There are no tournaments and it is not classed as a sport.    Size, weight, age and physical strength play only a small role in Aikido, also making it a uniquely suited option for women, children and older students. The Aikido Shudokan runs specialised children’s classes, and has a mix of male and female students and instructors.    The Aikido Shudokan has a clear lineage in the tradition of Aikido. Thambu Shihan first studied Yoshinkan Aikido in Malaysia in 1972 (aged 11) under his uncle Sensei Thamby Rajah, who was himself a student of Gozo Shioda – the founder of Yoshinkan Aikido and an outstanding pre-WWII student of Aikido’s founder Morihei Ueshiba. Shioda gave the name ‘Shudokan’, ‘Shu’ meaning to study, ‘do’ meaning the way and ‘kan’ meaning house. Sensei Joe Thambu was the last person to be tested by Shioda before his passing in 1994.   The first premises was established in 1983 on St Georges Road in Thornbury and in 2002, the dojo moved to Gooch Street to adapt to the increased student numbers. In September 2015, the Shudokan created a purpose-built dojo in Heidelberg West, which is truly world-class. All the dojo have been built and renovated by instructors and students throughout the years, and everyone continues to respectfully maintain the environment in which they learn.
